NOT:  Use a foot-long breaker bar during this procedure.
("Breaker bar" appears in some tool catalogs, but can be confusing.)

 Manufacturing Processes

RULE: 1.10 You can use verbs that are Manufacturing Processes.

Because there are so many Manufacturing Processes, and because each manufacturer may use a different verb for the same process, there is not a complete list of Manufacturing Process verbs in the Guide. Instead, we give you below a list of categories, with some examples, to help you decide if a verb expresses a Manufacturing Process. A verb qualifies as a Manufacturing Process if it is in one of these categories. It is a process that:

1.    Removes material: Drill, grind, mill, ream

2.    Adds material: Retread, remetal, insulate, flame spray

3.    Attaches material: Bond, crimp, rivet, weld

4.    Changes the mechanical strength, the structure, or physical properties of a material: Anneal, cure, normalize, heat-treat, magnetize

5.    Changes the surface finish of a material: Buff, burnish, plate, polish

6.    Changes the shape of a material: Cast, stamp, extrude, spin

RULE: 1.11 Use Manufacturing Processes only as verbs, not as nouns or adjectives (unless the noun form qualifies as a Technical Name).

 Example:

WRITE:  Ream the hole 0.20 inch larger than standard.
NOT:  Give the hole 0.20 inch over-ream.

 Consistent Language

RULE: 1.12 Once you choose the words to describe something, continue to use these same words (particularly Technical Names).

In procedures written in Simplified English, it is often necessary to use the same word many times in one text. This is because the number of words is limited, and their meanings are strictly defined.

When the same words are used many times, this can help the reader to understand the text. The reader becomes familiar with patterns of words and their meanings. Do not confuse the reader with different words that mean the same thing. When you choose words to describe an action, continue to use these same words when that action is described again. When you choose a Technical Name or Manufacturing Process, always use the same word or words to describe the same object or process.

 Example:

Sentences 1 and 2 describe the same maintenance action:

1. Remove the baseplate bolts to release the pump.

2. Remove the bolts that attach the pump and move the pump off the baseplate.

If these two sentences are used in different instructions to describe the same action, this can confuse the reader. Choose the version that is best and use it for all similar occasions.
