Monitoring One of the basic functions in ATC. Process of continuous or discrete comparison between the actual state of the system and the expected state of the traffic situation. Top-down process governed by the expected state of the system. Monitoring Aids That part of the automated system that assists controllers with track monitoring and routine clearance delivery tasks. Monitoring Aids User The recipients of the service provided by MONA. There are two kinds of User currently identified. Monitoring Criteria Parameter A system parameter that is determined at generation time in order to condition the behaviour of MONA. It consist of the following items : cleared level deviation threshold; lateral deviation threshold; longitudinal deviation threshold; potential level bust threshold(s); reminder lead time; reminder removal interval; speed deviation threshold; vertical altitude deviation threshold. Monopulse A technique used for determination of the angle of arrival of a single pulse, or reply within an antenna beam width. The angle-of-arrival is determined by means of a processor using the replies received through the sum and difference patterns of the antenna. The monopulse technique is generally termed monopulse direction finding and is a very important technique for SSR in modem ATC. Moving Target Detector A technique for achieving fixed and moving clutter rejection by a cascade of digital MTI and Pulse Doppler Filters. Moving Target Indicator A primary radar filtering device designed to reject fixed clutter and pass moving target on the basis of their Doppler shift. Or more generally a pre-whitening filter that reduces the fixed clutter below the white noise level. MTSAT Satellite Based Augmentation System Japanese geostationary overlay system. MSAS is based on an aeronautical package to be flown on the Multi-functional Transport Satellite (MTSAT), which also has a meteorological mission.
