Extension Validation The process by which a valid rating is endorsed for additional operational positions or sectors at the same unit. (Ref. Developed by Licensing Work Group). Extractor Equipment that transforms radar-pulses into digitised radar data. Extractor Monitoring Message Processing status message, correlated to the North Signal. Extremely High Frequencies The set of frequencies between 30 and 300 GHz.
F
Face Validity The extent to which a test appears to measure what it was supposed to measure. Facilitation The process of supporting everyone to do their thinking i.e. full participation, cultivating shared responsibility and promotes mutual understanding. Facilitator The person who supports everyone to do their best thinking. The facilitator encourages full participation, promotes mutual understanding and cultivates shared responsibility. By supporting everyone to do their best thinking, a facilitator enables group members to search for inclusive solutions and builds sustainable agreements. Facility Equipment, buildings or services provided for a particular activity or purpose. Failure Approach A specific approach to systems theory using the basis of a failure as an aid to greater understanding. Fairness A social, not psychometric, concept; a joint function of the procedure, the job, the population and how the scores are used. (SIOP, 1987). Faith The extent to which you believe that themachine will be able to intervene and support the tasks in other system states in the future. False Plot A false plot is defined to be any radar plot which has been detected and does not correspond with the position of the real aircraft (within certain limits). It is generally generated by the radar system as the result of an unwanted phenomenon (side-lobe effects, indirect send pulses, reflectors etc.). False Plot Analysis A SASS-C analysis application which provides a means of identifying the quantity and characteristics of false plots in a radar system. False Track Track initiated on false SSR/PR as side lobe, reflection, second time around, angel or clutter plot. Fatigue Physical or mental exhaustion due to exertion.

Fault Management Fault management encompasses fault detection, isolation and the correction of abnormal operation, and includes functions to maintain and examine error logs, accept and act upon error detection notifications, trace and identify faults, carry out sequences of diagnostic tests and correct faults. Feasible Capable of being done successfully given practical constraints (i.e. economically practical and technically possible) without misleading or uninterpretable results. (SIOP, 1987). Feed Back The return of part of the output (as a signal or information) to the input in order to modify the output. Feedback system A closed system influenced by its past behaviour. Feedback systems have feedback loop structure that consists of closed paths of cause and effect. They are self-regulating and can be either a positive feedback system or a negative feedback system. Fidelity (of simulation) The degree to which simulation matches the real system and the environment in terms of physical characteristics, functional characteristics (stimulus and response options) and conceptual fidelity (realism of the thought processes stimulated in the student). Field A coherent group or collection of discrete functions which has clearly recognised knowledge in common (e.g. Radar Navigation). Figure Of Merit 1- A system generated indication of the quality of the actual navigation performance of the aircraft. This is expressed as an indication of the aircraft position-fixing accuracy. (ICAO FANS Concept, ADSP).
