Radio Frequency Unit In the AMSS the Radio Frequency Unit converts the intermediate frequency (IF) inputs from the SDU into L-band RF signals, which are sent to the HPA for transmission. It also receives the L-band RF signals from the satellite via the LNA, converts them to IF the passes them to the SDU.
Radio Navigation The determination of position, or the obtaining of information relating to position, for the purposes of navigation by means of the propagation properties of radio waves. Radio Telephony The means of communication between ATC and pilots. Used to indicate the means (e.g., data link or RT) as well as the language and protocol. Radius A three digit figure in Nautical Miles to be used in the Qualifiers line that, together with the co-ordinates, defines the circle which encompasses the whole area of influence of the NOTAM. Random Access Channel In the AMSS used for air-to-ground signalling and data communications. As in the case of the P-channel, there are two types of R-channel : Rsmc and Rd. Random Data Channel The Rd channel is used for short duration data transmissions. Again, the system has been designed to support a number of Rd-channels. Random System Management & Control Channel The Rsmc-Channel is used for system signalling functions such as logon and call requests. Range-p The distance at which an aircraft is seen by the primary radar. Rate of Climb / Descent An aircraft's current rate of climb or descent. Usually expressed in feet per minute. Normal values range from 500 ft/min (e.g. on an ILS) to 2500 ft/min, though 4000 ft/min is possible. Military aircraft may have a RoC/D of over 10,000 ft/min. Rated Air Traffic Controller An air traffic controller holding a licence and valid rating/endorsement appropriate to the privileges to be exercised. (Ref. ICAO Doc 9569 Definitions).

Rating An authorisation entered on or associated with a licence and forming part thereof, stating special conditions, privileges or limitations pertaining to such licence. (Ref. ICAO Doc 9569 Definitions). Rating Endorsement An authorisation entered on or associated with a rating and forming part thereof, stating special conditions, privileges or limitations pertaining to such rating. (Ref. Developed by Licensing Work Group). Rating Training Specialised ATC training to provide knowledge and skills related to a job category and appropriate to the discipline to be pursued in the ATS environment. Ratings / Endorsements An autorisation entered on or associated with a licence and forming part thereof, stating special conditions, privileges or limitations pertaining to such licence. (Ref. ICAO Doc 9569 Definitions). Raw Score The obtained score on a measure without any transformation, such as percentages. Reaction Time Speed of reaction to a single stimulus. Readback A method of operational acknowledgement whereby the full operational contents of a message are repeated in full to ensure complete understanding by the message recipient. Real Equipment Either used in operational conditions (OJT) or in non-operational conditions (shadowing or demonstration). Real Time A learning/teaching system whereby the pace at which the learner has to work is the same as in real operation. Real-Time Civil/Military Co-ordination See Level 3 -Tactical ASM. Received Plots All messages received that relate to targets. Can be categorised in Primary, Secondary and Combined. Receiver Side Lobe Suppression A method, using two (or more) receivers to suppress aircraft replies which have been received via side lobes of the main beam of the antenna. Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring A technique whereby a civil GNSS receiver / processor determines the integrity of the GNSS navigation signals without reference to senders or non-DoD integrity systems other than the receiver itself. This determination is achieved by consistency check among redundant pseudorange measurements. Receptor A sensory nerve ending that changes specific stimuli into nerve impulses. Record Element within a table; In ASTERIX, a record is made up from information of the same Data Category. It consists of a Field Specification (see FSPEC) followed by a variable number of Data Fields. Each Data Field may contain one and only one data item, as defined in the catalogue of DATA ITEMS and in the relevant UAP.
