Psychomotor Test A physical test which aims to measure human capabilities such as co-ordination, steadiness, speed etc. Public Data Network A network providing a transmission service which can be subscribed to by the public. Publishing NOF The NOF responsible for the creation of the original NOTAM. Pulse Length The time between the 50 % amplitude points on the leading and trailing edges of a pulse. Also known as Pulse Width. Pulse Position Modulation Modulation technique used for Mode S replies where pulse transmitted in the first half of the bit position interval represents a binary ONE, whereas a pulse transmitted in the second half represents a binary ZERO. Pulse Recurrency Frequency See Pulse Repetition Frequency. Pulse Repetition Frequency Also known as Pulse Recurrency Frequency. It is the average number of pulses/interrogations per second transmitted by the radar.
See Stagger. Pulse Repetition Interval The average time interval (in seconds) between successive interrogations PRI=1/PRF. Pulse Train The sequence of framing and code pulses in the coded SSR reply. Pulse Width See Pulse Length.
Q
QNH Altimeter setting so that an aircraft’s altitude above MSL (Mean Sea Level) is indicated. This setting is used during departure and approach and requires the pilot to set the local pressure at MSL. APP will inform the pilot of the proper QNH setting (e.g. QNH one-zero-zero-seven). QNH Correction The correction applied to transponded Mode C values such that the altitude is obtained. Qualification 1- Formal document or proof which recognises that a person has completed a specialised course of study and a particular skill.
2- The process of demonstrating whether an entity is capable of fulfilling specified requirements.

Qualifier Line (Item Q) This Item is divided in eight fields each separated by a stroke and contains the necessary qualifiers to facilitate data retrieval. Quality Assurance All planned and systematic measures required to create the necessary confidence in the ability of a product / service to meet agreed quality requirements or standards. Quality of Service Information relating to data transfer characteristics (for example, requested throughput and priority) used by a router to perform relaying and routing operations across the sub networks which make up a network.
R
Radar A radar detection device which provides information on range, azimuth and/or elevation of objects. Radar Advisory The provision of advice and information based on radar observations. Radar Advisory Service A service provided within advisory service with the aid of radar to ensure separation, where practical, between aircraft which are operating on IFR flight plans. Radar Approach Control Facility A terminal ATC facility that uses radar and non-radar capabilities to provide approach control services to aircraft arriving, departing, or transiting airspace controlled by the facility. Radar Arrival An aircraft arriving at an airport served by a radar facility and in radar contact with the facility. Radar Clutter The visual indication on a radar display of unwanted signals. Radar Contact The situation which exists when the radar blip or radar position symbol of a particular aircraft is seen and identified on a radar display. Radar Control The term used to indicate that radar derived information is employed directly in the provision of air traffic control service. Radar Control Service A service provided by means of radar for the purpose of preventing collisions between aircraft and between aircraft and obstructions, expediting and maintaining an orderly flow of air traffic. Radar Controller A qualified air traffic controller holding a radar rating appropriate to the functions to which he is assigned. Radar Cross Section The area intercepting that amount of power which, when scattered equally in all directions, produces an echo at the radar equal to that from the target. Radar Data Processing System A sub-system of an ATC centre which processes the incoming radar data (from one or more radar data sources) and prepares it for display.
