Advanced Functionality Tool
Conceptual part of the automated system that assists controllers with their ATC tasks. The following such tools exist: Medium Term Conflict Detection, Arrival Manager, Departure Manager, Monitoring Aids, Safety Nets.
Note : Operational Requirements will be developed for each of these tools. Subse-quently they will each be realised in a layered ar-chitecture in which they are primarily manifested in the application and HMI layers with a support ‘data fusion’ layer providing the traffic situation.
Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control System A system providing routing, guidance, surveillance and control to aircraft and affected vehicles in order to maintain movement rate under all local weather conditions within the Aerodrome Visibility Opera-tional Level (AVOL) whilst maintaining the required level of safety. ASMGCS is seen as part of CNS/ATM and part of "gate to gate” operations con-cept, rather than merely providing guidance and control to aircraft and vehicles. Advisory A message that serves to warn the controller of ac-tual or anticipated actions that are required to bring a flight back to plan. Advisories are of the following type : time, speed, direction or, holding information. Advisory Airspace An airspace of defined dimensions, or designated route, within which air traffic advisory service is available. Advisory Circular Advisory Circulars are distributed by the FAA every fourteen days and contain information pertinent to flight safety. (i.e. equipment malfunctions, factors affecting security, navigation performance and air-space). Advisory Route A designated route along which air traffic advisory service is available. Aerial Work An aircraft operation in which an aircraft is used for specialised services such as agriculture, cons-truction, photography, surveying, observation and patrol, search and rescue, aerial advertisement, etc. Aerodrome A defined area on land or water (including buildings, installations and equipment) intended to be used either wholly or in part for the arrival, departure and surface movement of aircraft. Aerodrome Control Service Air traffic control service for aerodrome traffic. Aerodrome Control Unit An ATC unit in charge of the aircraft for landing and take-off phases. Aerodrome Flight Information Service The term used to describe the provision of informa-tion useful for the safe and efficient conduct of aerodrome traffic at those aerodromes designated for use by International General Aviation (IGA) where the appropriate air traffic services authority deter-mines that the provision of aerodrome control ser-vice is not justified, or is not justified on a 24 hour basis. (Ref. ICAO Doc 9569 Definitions). Aerodrome Flight Information Unit A unit established at an aerodrome to provide a flight information service to aerodrome traffic. (Ref. Aerodrome Traffic
All traffic on the manoeuvring area of an aerodrome and all aircraft flying in the vicinity of an aerodrome. (Ref. ICAO Doc 9569 Definitions).
