Airlines Electronic Engineering Committee
Aviation, being the most regulated mode of transportation, has always profited from a well institutionalised standardisation process. For avionics, standards are developed in RTCA, EUROCAE, AEEC and SAE, while the standards to ensure global ground-airborne inter-operability are established by ICAO and enforced through the inclusion of these standards in annexes as part of the Chicago Convention. The primary role of the AEEC centres on the investigation and approval of technological evolution which affect avionics standards. For instance, the AEEC has investigated interface between the satellite communications (SATCOM) equipment (ARINC Characteristic 741) and the GNSS (GPS & GLONASS) equipment (ARINC 743A) when these equipments are mounted on the same aircraft. As a result of this investigation, changes to ARINC 741 and 743A have been approved by the SATCOM and GNSS sub-committees of AEEC (see ARINC). In doing so, the AEEC decided to take a pragmatic approach to enable an early introduction of data communications for ATM applications and to enable a validation and realisation of the potential benefits from the new CNS/ATM concept.
AIRMET Information
Information issued by a meteorological watch office concerning the occurrence or expected occurrence of specified en-route weather phenomena which may affect the safety of low-level aircraft operations and which was not already included in the forecast issued for low-level flights in the flight information region concerned or sub-area thereof.
Airport
An area on land or water that is used or intended to be used for the landing and takeoff of aircraft and includes its buildings and facilities, if any.
Airport / Air Traffic Systems Interface
A programme to achieve the objectives of the ECAC Airports Strategy for the 1990s, to which Eurocontrol contributes by expanding EATCHIP to cover terminal and aerodrome control facilities.
Airport capacity (AMAN)
A value, for the amount of aircraft to be handled by the airport operator(s) within a given time period based on the airport’s infrastructure and runway(s) capacity(ies).
Airport Surveillance Radar
ASR is used by ATC airport tower controllers for terminal operations within a five to ten nautical mile radius of the airport during landing, take off and transition phases of flight.
