Human Machine Interface
Human Machine Interface (HMI) is the term used to describe the factors related to the way humans and technology interact. Because of the complexities, variables and unpredictable nature of HMI, human factors and related studies are moving into the fore front and are helping us better define this complex relationship, and most importantly develop models which predict and adequately prevent dangerous problems from repeatedly occurring. The increase in automated functions changes the human role which in turn directly impacts the design of the HMI.
Human Performance
1-The extent to which goals for speed, accuracy, quality, and other criteria are met by people functioning in working environments.
2- Human capabilities and limitations which have an impact on the safety and efficiency of aeronautical operations Human Reliability Assessment / Analysis Is concerned with the identification, the quantification and the prevention of errors. Human Resource Allocation The matching of people with activities or tasks as laid out in a business plan.
Human Resources Management (HRM) The conscious and specific direction of effort towards the quality of the workforce in the short and long-term. It involves all processes and activities aimed at managing the human resources of an organisation: manpower planning, recruitment, training, development and career management.
Human Supervisory Control One or more human operators are continually programming and receiving information from a computer that interconnects through artificial effectors and sensors to the controlled process or task environment. Human-Centred Design (approach) As opposed to technology-centred (or driven) approach. Provides the human with automated assistance that saves time and effort; the operator’s task performance is supported, not managed, by computing machinery. Hyperbolic Area Navigation System Originally developed for maritime use, based on signals received from a chain of master and slave ground stations located in northern Europe.
ICAO Region A region comprising States signatory to the ICAO Convention who provide Air Navigation Services in their domestic airspace and in international airspace for which they have been given responsibility. (ICAO Doc. 8700). Ident Feature/Ident Pulse The special feature in secondary radar equipment used to distinguish one displayed code from all other codes. Impact / Survivability The severity and criticality of adverse or negative consequences of relying on the machine to support successful completion of the tasks.

Implementation The action by which a participating State or Eurocontrol achieves a CIP Objective in accordance with commonly agreed Standards and specifications. Implementation actions are considered complete only when accepted for operational use. Improved Interrogation Side Lobe Suppression A technique whereby interrogation pulse P1 is transmitted via both the main beam and the control beam of the SSR antenna, such that a transponder in a side lobe direction more reliably receives a P1-P2 pulse pair thus suppressing the reply Incident An occurrence, other than an accident, associated with the operation of an aircraft that affects or could affect the safety of the operation of the aircraft. (ICAO, 1994). Inclination One of the orbital elements (parameters) that specifies the orientation of an orbit. Inclination is the angle between the orbital plane and a reference plane, the plane of the celestial equator for geocentric orbits and the ecliptic for heliocentric orbits. Incorrectly Executed Manoeuvre Non-Conformance A flight related situation that exists whenever any manoeuvring flight satisfies any of the following conditions with respect to the planned manoeuvre: on turn manoeuvre flight rolls out before the target heading is reached; on turn manoeuvre flight continues turn after the target heading is reached; on climb/descend manoeuvre flight levels-off before the cleared level is reached; on climb/descend manoeuvre flight continues past the cleared level. Indicated Air Speed Deviation Non-Conformance A flight related situation that exists whenever the difference between the flights estimated IAS and that permitted by the area IAS limit exceeds the IAS Deviation Threshold. Indicated Air Speed Deviation Threshold A monitoring criteria parameter that determines whether a IAS deviation non-conformance exists. Indicated Quality Of Service Indicated QOS is determined by the QOS parameters passed in protocol control information, and may reflect varying accuracy with respect to actual characteristics. Indirect Support Tasks Tasks which contribute to the development of a product and / or service in the longer term. Individual Simulation A real-time full-task simulation involving one single student. Individualised Training The provision in an establishment which is designed or designated specifically for training and staffed for that purpose. It might comprise basic and rating training. Inertial Navigation System INS is an on-board-self contained navigation device which uses computer controlled gyroscopes as an internal reference for long-range navigation. However, due to gyroscopic precision, the navigation accuracy of inertial systems reduces with time. Information Management The timely distribution of relevant, up-to-date and validated data to those who have the necessary autorisation to access it.
