Author
Person responsible for originating a document or modifying it. His or her name should be mentioned in the box 'Edition history' of the 'Document control' part of every controlled document.
Authoring System
Software tool allowing course developers to produce teachware for CBT.
Auto Land
Auto Land is a progressively common feature incorporated into the design and function of auto flight systems on-board most modem jet transports. For specially trained pilots, auto-land allows safe and efficient operations through landing roll out during periods when weather conditions are such that visibility, and cloud cover would normally prevent aircraft from landing using conventional methods. Currently, A/L systems use a combination of navigation beams associated with present Instrument Landing Systems and radar or radio altitude as means of lateral and vertical guidance from initial approach to touchdown.
Automated Air/Ground Data Interchange
Is the means by which airborne avionics and processing systems communicate with ground-based systems
Automated Configuration Function
Part of the automated system that assists supervisors in the task of managing the distribution of the ATC work amongst the available resources (controllers and automated functions).
Automated En-Route Air Traffic Control
Increased automation is one of the primary advantages of the Future Air Navigation System (FANS). Communications, Navigation, Surveillance (CNS) and Air Traffic Management (ATM) play a vital synergistic role in this equation. Automated En-Route Air Traffic Control (AERA) uses three tools: Airborne Collision Avoidance System (ACAS), Automatic Dependent Surveillance (ADS) and Secondary Surveillance Radar Mode S (SSR-Mode S) to monitor the maintenance of safe separation, manage airspace efficiently, and to assist the pilot in navigating safely. AREA relies on digital rather than voice data to convey necessary information to the aircraft. Information is routed to the pilot via ACARS or FWIFMC air/ground data link. However voice transmission remains an option if required.
Automated Skill (automaticity)
Cognitive and/or physical activities performed fast, effortlessly and with little or no attention, or conscious mental processing developed after consistent and repeated practice. Not all skills can be automated; usually they can be if there is a relatively consistent stimulus or context and response. (‘automated skills’ does not refer to ‘system automation’).
Automatic Dependent Surveillance
ADS is a function in which aircraft automatically transmit, via a data link, data derived from on-board navigation systems. This data is displayed to the controller on a screen that resembles a radar screen (Vidler, 1996).
Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast
ADS-B is a function on an aircraft or surface vehicle that broadcasts position, altitude, vector and other information for use by other aircraft, vehicles and by ground facilities.
