Examine the tail rotor gearbox and ensure that the oil level is correct and that chip detector is in (the sight gauge is the circular thingy in the top left of the picture below. The perspex panel is notoriously difficult to see through).

Examine the tail rotor hub assembly and test the flapping movement for free operation. Inspect the flapping bumper. Ensure that the pitch change spherical bearings are oil and moisture free. Move the blades to full pitch and check that the pitch change rods do not touch the hub (if they do, the wrong one has been fitted).
Inspect tip blocks of tail rotor blades and riveting for security and corrosion. Look along rotors for straightness. Grasp the spindle and check for free play.

Examine remainder of port tail boom assembly as for starboard side.
Open engine oil tank drain access flap and check tail rotor drive shaft bearings. Check for security of tank, draintap and for leaks. Do not remove items from oil cooler blower, as this is a high speed item and may be imbalanced as a result. Check red button on oil filter: damage and loose articles. Check float nitrogen level, if fitted.

Check the port engine compartment as for the starboard side, but also check the tail rotor drive shaft for freedom to float. In addition, inspect the input drive shaft for signs of loss of grease and general cleanliness of the compartment. There is a miniscule hole at the bottom of one of the pipes – ensure it is clear. Close the hatch.
Open the port hatch of the main gearbox compartment and examine gearbox mountings. Close the hatch.
Climb on top of the fuselage and complete the inspection of the main rotors, rotor head and main mast together with the pitch change rods. Inspect main rotor pitch links and pitch horn trunnion bearings for damage, security, corrosion, cracks and wear. Make sure the nuts and bolts are in the correct way, so that air pressure holds them in, should the retaining nut come off.
Move the main mast to test for deterioration of the gearbox isolation mount, lateral movement being acceptable, but none fore and aft. Inspect main rotor hub and stops for evidence of mast contact.

Inspect upper and lower blade surfaces for security and damage, trailing edges for delamination and hydraulic system filter bypass trim tabs and trailing edge weights indicator button for bypass for security and damage. Inspect condition and reservoir for level. blade root end doublers for

Inspect swashplate assembly anddelamination, using "coin tapping" boot for damage. Inspect pitchmethod in suspect areas. Inspect change horn for evidence of wear.
leading edges for erosion, damage Check security of gearbox filler cap.
and blade tape condition.
Check cowling fasteners and intake. Inspect hydraulic lines and actuators
Check remainder of port side as forfor leaks. On the Bell 206L, inspect starboard side.

Preflight
This is equivalent to the external walk-round in the Flight Manual. Of course, in most companies, the pilot also does the daily check, so a lot of things here are checked twice, but are done again if you take a machine over from someone else. The items here have been expanded to allow for comments and operating tips.
