Chapter 5

FLIGHT TRAINING
&
INSTRUCTOR

Simulator or Flight Training should be an enjoyable experience. By making each lesson a pleasant situation for the student, the flight instructor can maintain a high level of motivation. This should not be construed to mean that things must always be made easy for the student or that the instructor has to sacrifice standards to please the student. The student experiences pleasure from successful accomplishment of a learning task, just as surely as from a joyride.
The idea that people must be led to learning by making it easy has no basis in fact. There is more self-enhancement to be gained from the successful outcome of a difficult assignment than from just sitting back and taking it easy. People want to feel capable; they are proud when they achieve difficult tasks. A good instructor can motivate the student to tears and sweat, and the student will be grateful for it when the particular goal is achieved.
A session conducted according to the lesson plan is the one which can be expected to yield the best results. Most pilots have not-too-fond memories of an instructor who rushes up to them 5 or 10 minutes late exclaiming, "Hi, sorry I'm late. Listen, why don't you go ahead to the Simulator and do the pre-flight checks, I'll be with you in about 10 minutes.” The confused student walks to the simulator not knowing what to expect-envisioning the worst. It is much better for all concerned when the instructor is prepared to sit down with the student in a brief preflight session which explains what will be expected during the flight or in the simulator.
