Another good lecture technique is to use sentences of varying lengths. The consistent use of short sentences results in a choppy style. On the other hand, unless long sentences are carefully constructed, they are difficult to follow. When used poorly, long sentences can become too tangled for comprehension. To insure clarity and variety, instructors should combine use of sentences of short and medium lengths. 3.4.1.7 Types of Delivery A speech can be delivered in one of four possible ways: reading from a manuscript, reciting memorized material, speaking extemporaneously from an outline, or speaking impromptu, without preparation. Although many speakers appear to favor the latter, the results are usually proportional to the preparation. The teaching lecture is probably best when delivered in an extemporaneous manner. With this method; instructors speak from a mental or written outline, but do not read or memorize what they are going to say. This gives the lecture a more personalized tone than one that is being read or spoken from memory. Since they talk directly to the students, instructors can readily observe their reactions and adjust to their responses. For example, if they realize from their expressions that a large number of students fail to grasp an idea, they can elaborate on the idea until their reactions indicate that they understand. The extemporaneous presentation reflects the instructor's personal enthusiasm and is more flexible than other methods, so it is more likely to hold the attention of the students.
