QFE setting is local station pressure reading. It is taken near the touchdown zone. An altimeter set to QFE will read zero in the touchdown zone. In flight it will indicate height above the touchdown zone.
QNH setting is the local station pressure reading corrected to mean sea level. An altimeter set to QNH will indicate touchdown zone elevation above sea level when on the ground in the touchdown zone. Inflight it will read altitude above mean sea level.
Report leaving and reaching every altitude. Below the transition level you must report your altitude (height) in meters QFE. For example : “two thousand one hundred meters” or “one thousand five hundred meters” or “nine hundred meters,” etc.
Furthermore, every altitude (height) which ATC assigns below the transition level will be in meters QFE.
Issue I 28.08.2007 Rev. 0

11.10  Jeppesen Arrival and Departure Plates show altitude-crossing restrictions at and above the transition level in flight levels in feet. Altitude crossing restrictions below the transition are shown by Jeppesen on these charts in feet QNH. A tabulation of conversions is shown on these charts. But, unless and until Jeppesen agrees to also publish the altitudes in meters, at each point on the charts, the pilot may wish to write them in before arriving in the terminal area.
While navigating, reporting and completing checklists, it is more desirable to have written, at the proper point on the map, the altitude currently flying and reporting.
The pilot may also wish to write, in the approach plate, heights in meters QFE. Jeppesen approach plates show QNH altitudes in feet and in parenthesis QFE heights, but also in feet.
Sometimes both QFE and QNH altimeter settings will have been given by ATC in millibars. A good check to insure that they have not been inadvertently switched is as follows : Divide the touchdown zone or airfield elevation in feet by 30. For example, RWY 34R touchdown zone elevation at Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is 131 ft. 131 divided by 30 yields a result of approximately 4.4. The QFE altimeter setting there should be approximately
