The initial cruise portion of the flight is routine. Reaching the southern portion of the Canadian Northern Control Area (NCA), you enter the Area of Magnetic Unreliability. (See Flight Manual section 3-1 for additional information.)
The Canadian area of magnetic unreliability is defined as the entire Northern Domestic Airspace, i.e., the Norther Control Area (NCA) and the Arctic Control Area (ACA). The boundaries of the NCA and the ACA are charted on the Canada / Alaska (CA) Enroute Chart series. Within this area, VOR’s and runways are referenced to true north and true courses are charted.
The area of magnetic unreliability in Russia is not formally defined. However, recognizing that nearly the same effects of magnetic unreliability exist in the Russian far north as in Canada, Boeing considers the area north of 70 N on polar routes in Russian airspace also to be an area of magnetic unreliability.
Airways in northern Russia, south of 70 N, are referenced to magnetic north. Airways north of 70 N could use either magnetic or true as indicated on the chart.

9.3 Navigation Aids
ADF bearings are measured at the airplane, not at the station. With the compass system referenced to magnetic, the bearing is displayed as magnetic. Attempting to navigate on an ADG course charted as true could create a great deal of

confusion. VOR radials are measured at the station. If a VOR station is oriented to true north, the radials are true. See the B777 Flight Manual section 3-1 for additional information.

9.4 Long-Range Navigation
Long-range navigation procedures are required for operations beyond the operational service volume of VOR, DME, and NDB radio facilities (class II airspace). On the polar routes all long-range navigation procedures described in the Flight Manual Section 3-1 apply. An easy method for determining when the aircraft is not receiving ground base VOR/DME signals is to leave the VOR/ADF switches in the VOR position and check for reception on the ND.
