.  On polar routes beyond areas of radar coverage, squawk 2000

.  Arctic Radio

7.1.1  Arctic Radio is a general purpose (GP) facility that handles communications with Edmonton Center and Anchorage Center for the northern FIR’s all the way to the Russian FIR boundaries. They operate on the ICAO Family D HF frequencies : 2971,4675, 8891 and 11279 as well as a number of VHF remote sites on 126.7 or 126.9. Their HF antennas are located at Cambridge Bay on the south coast of Victoria Island. The transmitter antenna is a fixed directional antenna with typical coverage beyond the North Pole, east to Iceland and Norway and south to Churchill. On initial contact, obtain the primary and secondary frequencies and a SELCAL check. If unable to contact Arctic Radio on HF, attempt contact with Iceland Radio, Cedar Rapids, Rainbow Radio, Stockholm Radio, Houston Radio, Speedbird London or San Francisco Radio. Refer to the Jeppesen Polar Orientation Chart for frequencies.
Issue I 28.08.2007  Rev. 0
Currently, Arctic Radio does not have phone patch capability. This service can be provided through Stockholm Radio, Rainbow Radio, Houston Radio, and San Francisco Radio if needed.
7.1.2  Arctic Radio/Reykjavik OCTA has also informed us to coordinate all step climbs early. The coordination that must take place between Arctic Radio, Anchorage, Reykjavik and Russia is time consuming. If the flight plan has a step climb within an hour of your ETA to ABERI, DEVID, RAMEL or ORVIT it is imperative that the coordination with Arctic Radio starts as early as possible. If you wait until you are within an hour of ABERI, DEVID, RAMEL or ORVIT to make the altitude request in all likelihood it will be denied until after you are in Russian airspace.
Therefore, on initial contact with Arctic Radio/Reykjavik OCTA on VHF or HF, crews must coordinate :
ETA to the Polar gateway fix (ABERI, DEVID, RAMEL, or ORVIT).
Planned step climbs prior to Polar gateways (Lat/Lon’s and altitude and requested altitude (in meters) when transitioning to Russian airspace.
