.
Due to the close proximity of the Magnetic North Pole and the resulting rapid changes in magnetic variation it is advisable to continually update the MCP heading to match the current heading as displayed on the ND. In this case if the ADIRU fails, follow the checklist and set the last known heading (from the MCP) into the FMC. Otherwise, it could be difficult to establish a new heading to place into the FMC.

9.6  Waypoint Procedures
Approaching a waypoint, Airindia’s long-range navigation procedure’s call for setting the outbound M/H heading from the flight plan on the MCP prior to waypoint passage. Due to the close proximity of the magnetic north pole there is a significant difference between MAG & TRUE during AMU and polar operation. Setting the magnetic heading is of little benefit in the AMU/Polar Region.
Therefore, whenever the FMC is operating in TRUE (as displayed on the ND
Issue I 28.08.2007  Rev. 0

and PFD) set the “T” (true course) from the leg’s page of the FMC on the MCP heading.

9.7 FIR Convergence
Several FIRs converge at the North Pole, including, Edmonton, Anchorage, and several Russian FIRS. Arctic Radio handles communications with both Edmonton and Anchorage Centres through their FIRs. Murmansk and Magadan are the controlling Russian ATC units for flights on DEVID – B480, RAMEL-G491 until within VHF range near the domestic FIR, when control transfers to Tiksi Control on VHF. The Russian FIRs transited by ORVIT – G494 are controlled by Magadan Control until within VHF range near the domestic FIR, when control transfers to Chockurdakh Control on VHF.

9.8 Cruising Levels in Meters
The standard meters cruising levels in Russia and the Central Asian Republics are the same. These differ from the standard meters cruising levels in the Peoples Republic of China (PRC). Refer to the Cruising Levels tables shown on the Polar Orientation Chart or the Enroute Charts for Russia, the Central Asian Republics, Mongolia and the PRC. Expect clearance to a feet flight level when transiting to Afghanistan from the metric flight levels used in Russia and Central Asia
