mice (gas turbine engine components). Small restrictors placed in the tail pipe of a gas turbine engine to change the exhaust nozzle area. Changing the area of the exhaust nozzle affects the trim conditions of the engine.
micro. The metric prefix that means one millionth, 1/1,000,000, or 0.000 001 of a unit. Microfarads, microhenries, microwatts, and micrograms are all commonly used terms having this prefix. Micro is also generally used as a prefix to mean something is unusually small; for example, microelectronics, microbiology, and microgroove.
microammeter. An electrical current measuring instrument sensitive enough to measure a flow as small as a few microamperes (millionths of an ampere).
microballoons. Hollow, microscopic-size spheres of hardened phenolic resin. Microballoons add body with very little weight to a resin used as a filler. The resin is mixed with the proper amount of accelerator, and then sufficient microballoons are added to give the resin enough body to be an effective filler.
microbarograph (meteorology). An aneroid barograph designed to record atmospheric pressure changes of very small magnitudes.
microbial contaminants. A scum inside the fuel tanks of turbine-engine-powered aircraft caused by micro-organisms that feed on the fuel and live in water that has condensed from the fuel. This scum clogs fuel filters, lines, and fuel controls and holds water in contact with the aluminum alloy fuel tank structure causing severe corrosion.
microburst (meteorology). A localized, extremely high-intensity column of descending air. Microbursts have such extreme downward velocity that any aircraft, when flying slow near the ground, as during takeoff and landing, can be slammed into the ground before it is able to fly out of it.
microcircuit (electronic component). A small electronic device having a large number of equivalent circuit elements made onto a single substrate, or layer of supporting material. An IC chip is an excellent example of a microcircuit, as it contains many equivalent components and many separate circuits, all in an extremely small package.
microcomputer. An electronic computer consisting of a central processing unit (CPU), input and output devices, and some memory capacity. Microcomputers are smaller and slower than either mini-computers or mainframe computers.
microelectronics. The branch of electronics working with integrated circuits (ICs) and with extremely small circuit components.
microfarad. A unit of capacitance equal to one millionth of a farad. The microfarad, abbreviated μf, mf, or mfd, is equal to 1 x 10-6 farads, or 1,000,000 (1 x 106) picofarads.
microfiche. A photographic method of record storage in which information to be stored is photographed and printed on sheets of photographic film called fiche. Different formats, ranging from 24 pages to 288 pages of information, can be printed on a single fiche. Micro-fiche is read in an enlarging machine, called a reader, that displays the page of information on a screen that looks much like a television screen. Some readers have a built-in printer that can produce a full-size printed copy of the information.
