linear accelerometer. An accelerometer that measures the rate of change of motion in a straight line. linear actuator (fluid power system component). A device which uses a piston moving inside a cylinder to change hydraulic or pneumatic pressure into linear (straight line) motion. linear amplification (electronic amplification). Amplification of a signal in which the amplitude of the output is directly proportional to the amplitude of the input. linear change. A change in which the output is directly proportional to the input. linear control (electrical control). A device that changes its controlling function by the same increments throughout its complete range of movement. A potentiometer can be made in the form of linear control. The resistance of a linear potentiometer changes the same amount for each degree of rotation of its control shaft. linear integrated circuit (electronic component). An integrated circuit (IC) whose output changes directly as the input changes. Linear ICs are often called analog ICs. Some of the more commonly used linear ICs are voltage regulators, comparators, sense amplifiers, and linear amplifiers. linear operation. An operation in which the output of a device is directly proportional to its input. If the value of the input increases by ten percent, the output will increase its value by ten percent. linear taper (electrical resistance). The change in resistance of a potentiometer that varies directly with the number of degrees of rotation of the potentiometer shaft. line boring. A method of assuring that all of the bearing cavities for a crankshaft or camshaft are in correct alignment. A boring bar extends through the crankcase and cuts the inside diameters of all the bearing cavities so they are concentric. line loss (electrical power). Electrical power lost in the process of moving current through a transmission line. line maintenance (aircraft maintenance). Maintenance that can be done without having to take the aircraft into a hangar or maintenance dock. Troubleshooting, minor repairs, systems servicing, and the removal and replacement of many components are classified as line maintenance. linen. A type of cloth made from yarn spun from fibers of the flax plant. Linen has been used for centuries as a fine cloth for clothing, and at one time was popular as a fabric for covering airplane structures. line-of-sight radio reception. A characteristic of certain radio signals that causes them to act in the same way as light. These signals travel in straight lines and cannot bend around obstructions. Very-high-frequency (VHF) and ultra-high-frequency (UHF) communications are line-of-sight transmissions which require a clear path between the transmitting and receiving antennas. The reception distance of VHF and UHF signals is dependent upon the altitude of the aircraft above the transmitting antenna. line voltage (electrical power system). The voltage measured at the power line which supplies power to a piece of electrical equipment. In an installation using alternating current, this voltage is the effective, or rms, value of the AC. |
