insulation strength. A measure of the amount of electrical stress an insulation can withstand before it breaks down and conducts. Insulation strength is measured in volts-per-unit of insulation thickness, normally in volts-per-mil (0.001 inch).
insulator (electrical). A material whose outer shell electrons (valence electrons) are so tightly bound to the atom that they resist any force that tries to move them from one atom to another. Glass, mica, paper, ceramics, and certain types of plastic materials are used as insulators in electrical and electronic equipment.
intake valve (reciprocating engine component). The valve in the cylinder of a reciprocating engine through which the fuel-air mixture passes as it enters the combustion chamber.
integer. A whole number, or counting number. Integers include negative numbers, positive numbers, and zero.
integral fuel tank (aircraft fuel tank). A fuel tank that is formed by sealing off part of the aircraft structure and using it to hold fuel. An integral wing tank is called a “wet wing” and is used because of its weight saving.
The only way to repair an integral fuel tank is by replacing damaged sealant and making riveted repairs, as is done with any other part of the aircraft structure.
integrated circuit. A tiny chip or wafer of silicon on which is etched, imprinted, or diffused electronic components such as transistors, diodes, capacitors and resistors with their interconnections.
integrating circuit. An electronic circuit whose output is determined by the sum of all of its inputs.
intensity control (cathode-ray tube). The control for a cathode-ray tube that regulates the quantity of electrons in the beam that strikes the phosphorescent screen inside the cathode-ray tube. The intensity of the electron beam determines the amount of light produced by the screen.
intercooler (reciprocating engine installation component). An air-to-air heat exchanger installed between a turbosupercharger and the carburetor. Intercoolers decrease the temperature of the compressed air to prevent detonation.
A turbosupercharger compresses the air before it enters the fuel metering system of a reciprocating engine, and when it is compressed, it becomes too hot to be used. Before it enters the induction system, it is cooled by passing it through an intercooler.
intercostal. A structural member used in a stressed-skin structure to stiffen the skin between the bulkheads or other major structural components. An intercostal does not carry stresses from the skin into the structure supporting the skin.
intercylinder baffles (reciprocating engine component). Pieces of thin sheet metal installed between the cylinders of an air-cooled aircraft engine to force air to flow through the fins on the cylinders.
interelectrode capacitance. The capacitance between the electrodes in an electron tube (vacuum tube). A capacitor is simply two conductors separated by an insulator, or dielectric. The electrodes in an electron tube are the conductors, and the vacuum is the dielectric.
