repairman license (Federal Aviation Administration license). A license issued by the Federal Aviation Administration under 14 CFR Part 65 to a specialist in some form of aircraft maintenance who is employed by a certificated repair station or airline. The repairman certificate (license) is valid only as long as the repairman is employed by the company for which the certificate was issued. Repair Station. A certificated maintenance facility approved by the FAA to perform certain specific maintenance functions. These facilities are certificated under 14 CFR Part 145. repeating decimal (mathematics). The decimal equivalent of a fraction in which the denominator does not go into the numerator an even number of times. The fraction 1/3 gives a repeating decimal: 0.3333333…. “Report” (air traffic control). A term used by ATC to instruct pilots to advise ATC of specific information, such as “Report passing Hamilton VOR.” reporting point. 14 CFR Part 1: “A geographic location in relation to which the position of an aircraft is reported.” repulsion. A mechanical force that tries to move objects apart. There is a force of repulsion between like magnetic poles, between electrical charges of the same polarity, and between parallel wires carrying current in the same direction. repulsion motor (electric motor). A type of AC motor in which the source current is supplied to the stator winding, and current is induced into the rotor windings. The rotor windings end at copper bars on a commutator, and brushes pick up rotor current. The brushes are connected together so they short-circuit some of the rotor windings. Rotor current flowing through the short-circuited coils produces a magnetic field whose axis is at an angle to the magnetic field in the stator. Because the two magnetic fields are at an angle to each other, they repel, or push away from, each other. The brushes of a repulsion motor are usually mounted on a control that allows them to be rotated with reference to the stator field. Moving the brushes controls the direction of rotation and the speed of a repulsion motor. required equipment (aircraft equipment). Equipment required by the FAA to be installed in an aircraft for it to be considered airworthy. All FAA-certificated aircraft must carry an up-to-date equipment list, itemizing all of the required equipment. |
