refining (petroleum production). The process in which a material, such as crude oil, is broken down into its constituent parts.
reflector (light). A polished surface used to reflect light. When light strikes a reflector it changes its direction. The angle of reflectance at which the light leaves the surface is exactly the same as the angle at which it arrived at the surface, the angle of incidence. By using the proper shape reflector, the light can be formed into a beam.
refraction (radar technology). The bending of a radar beam by variations in atmospheric density, water vapor content, and temperature.
refrigerant. A chemical compound used in a refrigerator or air conditioning system to absorb heat, then carry it to another location where it is given up to the outside air.
refrigerant-12. The refrigerant that was formerly widely used in aircraft vapor-cycle air cooling systems. Refrigerant-12 (R-12) is the name generally used for dichlorodifluoromethane, which is sold under such registered trade names as Freon-12, Genetron-12, and Ucon-12. R-12 is being replaced by R-134a, which is more environmentally friendly.
regeneration (electronic amplification). A method of increasing the gain of an amplifier by feeding part of the amplified signal back into its input in phase with the input signal. If too much energy is fed back into the input, the amplifier will oscillate and produce an unwanted signal, often in the form of a whistle, or squeal. Regeneration is also called regenerative feedback or positive feedback.
regenerative braking (electrical braking). A method of slowing the rotating armature of an electric motor. When the brake control switch is moved to the STOP position, it removes power from the motor and connects the armature across an electrical load. As long as the armature is rotating, it produces electrical current, and power is required to force this current through the load. This power taken from the rotating armature causes it to slow down.
registration certificate (aircraft document). A document issued by the FAA which shows the name and address of the owner of the aircraft. The registration certificate must be displayed in the aircraft at all times.
regulated power supply (electrical power supply). An electrical device that changes line-voltage alternating current into direct current with the required voltages. The regulator circuit causes the voltage to remain constant as the load current varies.
regulator tube (electron tube voltage regulator). A gas-filled, glow-discharge electron tube. A regulator tube is installed in parallel with the load across the output of a DC power supply. The regulator tube maintains a constant voltage across its terminals, even as the current flowing through it changes.
reheat system. The British name for afterburner. See afterburner.
Reid vapor pressure. The amount of pressure that must be exerted on a liquid to keep it from vaporizing. The vapor pressure of a liquid is affected by its temperature, and the Reid vapor pressure of a liquid is specified at 100°F.
