thermostatic bypass valve (reciprocating engine lubricating system component). A temperature-sensing valve in an oil cooler that opens when the oil is cold and allows it to flow around the core of the cooler, between the core and the cooler jacket. When the oil is hot, the bypass valve closes and forces the oil to flow through the core of the cooler. thermostatic expansion valve (air conditioning system component). The component in a vapor-cycle cooling system that meters the refrigerant into the evaporator. The amount of refrigerant metered by the thermostatic expansion valve, or TXV, is determined by the temperature and pressure of the refrigerant as it leaves the evaporator coils. The TXV changes the refrigerant from a high-pressure liquid into a spray of low-pressure liquid. thermoswitch. An electrical switch that closes a circuit when it is exposed to a specified high temperature. thickness gage. A precision measuring tool made of a series of narrow strips of steel. Each strip is ground to an accurate thickness with the thickness marked on each gage. Thickness gages are used to measure the clearance, or the distance between parts, by finding the thickest gage that can be slipped between them. thinner (finishing system component). A solvent mixed with a finishing material, such as lacquer, dope, or enamel, to reduce its viscosity so it can be sprayed. third-class lever. A lever in which the force is applied between the fulcrum and the weight. The force needed to move the weight is greater than the weight, but the distance moved by the weight is greater than that moved by the force. thixotropic agent (plastic resin component). A material, such as microballoons, added to a resin to give it body and increase its workability. three-axis automatic pilot. An automatic flight control system for an aircraft that controls the movement of the aircraft about all three of its axes. |
