antidetonation injection system. See ADI system.
antidrag wire. A diagonal, load-bearing member of a Pratt truss wing. Antidrag wires run from the rear spar inboard, to the front spar outboard, and are crossed by the drag wires. Antidrag wires oppose the aerodynamic loads on the wing that try to move the tip of the wing forward. See illustration for pratt truss.
antifreeze. A chemical added to a liquid to lower its freezing point. Ethylene glycol, a form of alcohol, is an antifreeze agent that is normally used as the coolant in liquid-cooled reciprocating engines.
antifriction bearing. Any bearing that supports a rotating shaft with a rolling contact, rather than a sliding contact. Ball bearings, roller bearings, and needle bearings are all antifriction bearings. Plain bearings and bushings which support rotating shafts with a sliding contact between the bearing and the shaft are called friction-type bearings.
antiglare paint. A black or dark paint that dries to a dull or, nonspecular, finish. Antiglare paint is applied to a surface, such as the deck in front of the windshield of an aircraft, to prevent glare interfering with the flight crew’s visibility.
anti-icing. The prevention of the formation of ice on a surface. Ice may be prevented by the use of heat or by covering the surface with a chemical which prevents water adhering to the surface. Anti-icing should not be confused with deicing, which is the removal of ice after it has formed on the surface.
anti-icing additive (turbine engine fuel). A chemical added to turbine-engine fuel used in some aircraft. This additive mixes with water that condenses from the fuel and lowers its freezing temperature so it will not freeze and block the fuel filters. It also acts as a biocidal agent and prevents the formation of microbial contamination in the tanks.
anti-icing fluid. A fluid, usually made of some form of alcohol and glycerine, that is sprayed on an aircraft to keep ice from forming on the surfaces. Anti-icing fluid is also carried in the aircraft and is sprayed over the windshield, along the propeller blades, and into the carburetor throat in flight.
anti-icing system (airframe system). A system that prevents the formation of ice on an aircraft structure.
anti-icing system (gas turbine engine system). A system in a gas turbine engine in which hot compressor bleed air is routed through the engine air inlet system to warm it so ice will not form on it.
antiknock rating (antidetonation characteristics). The rating of a reciprocating engine fuel that refers to the ability of the fuel to resist detonation. The antiknock rating is generally called the octane rating of the fuel because iso-octane is used as the reference fuel for the rating.
antileak check valve (reciprocating engine lubrication system component). A check valve used in the oil tank of some aircraft reciprocating engines equipped with dry-sump lubrication systems.
Antileak check valves hold the oil in the tank against the pull of gravity, but as soon as the oil pump puts a low pressure on the check valve, it opens and allows oil to flow from the tank into the engine.
