correlation box (helicopter engine control unit). A component in the reciprocating engine controls for a helicopter that automatically increases and decreases the amount of throttle opening as the collective pitch control is raised or lowered.
The final adjustment of the power must be done by the twist grip, because the correlation box does not adjust for nonstandard atmospheric conditions.
corrosion. An electrolytic action which takes place inside a metal or on its surface. The metal reacts with an electrolyte, and part of the metal is changed into a salt, which is the corrosion. Corrosion is dry and powdery and has no physical strength.
corrosion inhibiting primer (aircraft finishing system component). A primer which prevents, or at least slows, the formation of corrosion in the metal it covers.
corrosion inhibitor. A material used to stop or slow the action of corrosion. To protect aluminum and magnesium alloys from corrosion, a tight, continuous oxide film is deposited on the surface. This film acts as a corrosion inhibitor.
corrosion prevention compound (reciprocating engine preservative). A special oil that has little tendency to run off of a surface on which it is sprayed. Corrosion prevention compound is sprayed into the cylinders of a reciprocating engine when it is to be stored. This compound forms an airtight seal over the surface of the metal and keeps air and moisture away from the surface. When air and moisture cannot reach the metal, corrosion or rust cannot form on it.
corrosion-resistant steel. Steel alloyed with nickel and chromium, to increase its resistance to corrosion or rust. Corrosion-resistant steel is also called stainless steel.
corrugate. To form ridges or waves in a piece of material to increase its rigidity.
corrugated fastener (wood fastener). A small strip of corrugated steel ground on one edge to form a series of sharp points. Corrugated fasteners are driven into butt joints in wood to fasten the pieces together.
corrugated sheet metal. Sheets of metal that have been made more rigid by forming a series of parallel ridges or waves in their surfaces.
cosecant (trigonometric function). The trigonometric function which is the ratio of the length of the hypotenuse of a right triangle to the length of the side opposite an acute angle.
cosine (trigonometric function). The trigonometric function which is the ratio of the length of the side adjacent to an acute angle in a right triangle to the length of the hypotenuse.
cosmic ray. A stream of electrons and hydrogen atom nuclei that comes from outer space, penetrates the earth’s atmosphere, and strikes the earth from all directions. Cosmic rays travel at the speed of light.
cotangent (trigonometric function). The trigonometric function which is the ratio of the length of the side adjacent to an acute angle in a right triangle to the length of the side opposite the angle.
cotter pin. A split metal pin used to safety a castellated or slotted nut to a bolt. The cotter pin, which is also called a cotter key, is passed through the slots in the nut and the hole drilled through the shank of the bolt. The ends of the pin are spread back over the end of the bolt and the side of the nut to prevent the nut turning on the bolt.
