AUTOMATED WEATHER OBSERVATION STATION (AWOS). Equipment used to automatically record weather conditions (i.e. cloud height, visibility, wind speed and direction, temperature, dew-point, etc.). AUTOMATED TERMINAL INFORMATION SERVICE (ATIS). The continuous broadcast of recorded non-control information at towered airports. Information typically includes wind speed, direction and active runway. AZIMUTH. Horizontal direction expressed as the angular distance between true north and the direction of a fixed point (as the observer’s heading). BEARING. The horizontal direction to or from any point, usually measured clockwise from true north or magnetic north. CIRCLING APPROACH. A maneuver initiated by the pilot to align the aircraft with the CLASS G AIRSPACE. See Controlled Airspace. CONTROLLED AIRSPACE. Airspace of defined dimensions within which air traffic control services are provided to instrument flight rules (IFR) and visual flight rules (VFR) flights in accordance with the airspace classification.
